70s Stoneware Collection

Updated: Jun 22, 2023

In anticipation of this project, I spent time over the summer break making a 1970s stoneware collection. I trawled Opp shops and local facebooks groups to find different sizes and shapes of crockery of the era of my childhood. I particularly remember the brown striped dishes and the forms with a broad outer rim. Although this was my starting point, I didn't want to use the original (now vintage) dishes or slavishly reproduce them, but I wanted to capture something of their essence. In retrospect, I don't know how successful I have been in this aspect of the project, and I am questioning whether to loop back in an attempt to reproduce something more characteristic of the time, or to persist with the journey away from representation towards abstraction. The latter approach makes a more universal narrative. I have used white porcelain for my "reproductions", which introduces concepts of purity, fragility and value in addition to bridging to the more contemporary trend for plain white dinnerware.
