Scale and Repetition

I'm brainstorming ideas for our Collagraph project. As well as thinking about materiality, we've been challenged to incorporate the concepts of scale and repetition.

MC Escher, Metamorphosis 1 (1937)

I grew up with a fascination for the work of MC Escher, like this woodcut. This is a beautiful, but impossible world in which things are not what they appear to be. His tessellated patterns are remarkable in their precision and their subtle shifts. The idea of things not being what they seem is also relevant to my childhood memories in significant ways. I've also come across some fascinating tessellations in the world of quilt-making.

So here are some initial ideas I'm exploring for this project:

* tessellations and optical illusions

* domestic textiles--ideas from quilt-making

* memories
